Fondazione Invernizzi
The relationship between the Fondazione Romeo ed Enrica Invernizzi and Università Bocconi is rooted in more than thirty years of collaboration, built on a deep alignment of values and shared goals. Over time, this relationship has grown stronger and evolved into a genuine partnership dedicated to advancing scientific research, knowledge, and social progress. Today, the Foundation is the University's most important Donor: Through its sustained philanthropic commitment, it has helped educate generations of researchers in the social sciences, supporting Bocconi's research activities and playing a pivotal role in the growth of its Doctoral School. Every initiative supported and every investment made by the Foundation has contributed to expanding and disseminating knowledge, generating a lasting and tangible impact on society.
In 2011, the Foundation established the Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Chair in Development Economics, marking a significant milestone in its long-standing commitment to research excellence. Between 2016 and 2020, the partnership grew even stronger with the naming of ICRIOS – The Invernizzi Center for Research on Innovation, Organization, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, the creation of LEAP – Laboratory for Effective Anti-poverty Policies, and the renewal of the Foundation's substantial annual support for the University's research activities and Doctoral School.
In 2018, the Foundation further strengthened its commitment by supporting the establishment of the Invernizzi AGRI Lab – Agribusiness Research Initiative at SDA Bocconi School of Management, as well as the innovative research initiatives of GREEN – Geography, Resources, Environment, Energy and Networks.
Since 2021, the the Foundation has also supported the Health Emergencies Analytics Lab (formerly the Covid Crisis Lab), BLEST – Bocconi Lab on European Studies, and the "Una Scelta Possibile" Scholarship Program. Through a major philanthropic gift, the Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to academic merit and social mobility by helping remove the socioeconomic barriers that limit access to higher education and enabling talented students to pursue their studies at Bocconi regardless of their financial circumstances.
Since 2023, the Foundation has continued to invest in research in strategic and emerging fields through the establishment of two new endowed chairs: the Fondazione Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Chair in Computer Science, initially held by the internationally renowned computer scientist Luca Trevisan, who passed away prematurely in 2024, and now held by Professor Marc Mézard; and the Fondazione Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Chair in Behavioural Economics and Finance, held by Professor Nicola Gennaioli. In 2024, the Foundation also established the Fondazione Romeo and Enrica Invernizzi Chair in Innovation Management, conceived not only as a hub for theoretical research but also as a platform for experimentation and innovation.
Through the establishment of an endowed chair and the naming of the ICRIOS research center, the Fondazione Romeo ed Enrica Invernizzi also chose to allocate a significant portion of its gift to Bocconi University's endowment, demonstrating its strong confidence in the University's mission and in its responsible stewardship of philanthropic resources. The endowment is the University's permanent fund, invested with a long-term perspective to generate annual returns that help ensure the independence, stability, and long-term sustainability of Bocconi's research and educational activities.
