“Those who live in specific conditions are not useful to the economic system and therefore are marginalized, like rejects. Education can help fight this process, transforming the life of a reject into a worthy life.”
Beneficiary of the project “Bocconi in Opera”
The project – ln 2016, Bocconi University and the Prison Administration of Lombardy launched a social mobility project aiming at rehabilitating inmates by means of an incredible opportunity: enrolling in a “distance learning” undergraduate course in Economics and Management (CLEAM). 24 Bocconi professors joined this project, which is open to up to 10 students per year and accessible through a merit ranking for those who have the approval of the Prison Administration. Candidates with sentences longer than 5 years are preferred for this program, in the effort of giving value to the activities of those serving a long sentence.
Within this project, Bocconi has created a close collaboration with the correctional facility of Opera. Opera has been going through a profound and successful transformation aimed at giving back humanity to imprisonment through higher education. A constant and direct effort has been made by Bocconi: so far, 11 students have been given the opportunity to study a CLEAM undergraduate course, with Bocconi entirely covering the cost of fees and allowing the beneficiaries to focus on their studies by offering ad hoc activities and specific tools. The “distance learning” students receive weekly recording of their lessons, take their exams at Opera with the help of tutors and concentrate on their studies on a daily basis.
Your help is important – Through their work, professors and staff experience first hand the impact that accessing education has on the quality of life of those that benefit from the project. As they put all their energy and passion in their studies, they rediscover their role as individuals and members of society.
You can help: show your support and be by their side on this path of growth.
